Dera R. Williams is an Oakland writer who writes in the fiction, nonfiction and memoir genres. A child of the Great Migration, she moved to California from Arkansas at two years old. As a family historian, Dera researches and writes about her family and has assisted others in researching and writing their family histories. Dera has contributed to over a dozen anthologies and has co-authored a work of fiction, Mothers and Daughters. Her most current anthology contributions are the best-selling All the Women in My Family Sing: Essays on Equality, Justice, and Freedom and Where's My Tiara. She has compiled a collection of childhood memories, In My Backyard: Stories of Growing Up in Oakland, while working on a Great Migration novel about and speculative fiction series. Dera has contributed profiles in two encyclopedias. Dera has also curated Time Capsules: Migration Stories and Co-curated Let’s Play Exhibition and NEA funded Digital Literature Garden. Exploring the relationship of myth and family history in her writing, she honors the voices of her ancestors’ stories. .
